Day 10: The Bridge

According to Sirius: The softer side of classic and contemporary rock.

Driving Circumstances: Pretty normal on the ride in, maybe getting in a little after 9am, but got to experience The Bridge on a quick jaunt for lunch, as well as a ride home around 9:30pm.

My Experience: Honestly, this just felt like a combination of Sirius 2: Starlite and the slower parts of Sirius 7: Totally '70s. I kind of felt in a daze for most of this, and really wasn't getting into this at all. I mean, here's what you can expect: James Taylor and Crosby, Stills & Nash. And more James Taylor, followed by some Jackson Browne. And how about MORE James Taylor? In my brief time in the car today, I heard three James Taylor songs. Groovy. The only real high point was when two Paul Simon (sans Garfunkel) songs popped up at two different times.

Sample Playlist:
  • The Eagles, Lyin' Eyes
  • Joni Mitchell, Chelsea Morning
  • Paul Simon, Kodachrome
  • James Taylor, Only One
  • Crosby, Still & Nash, You Don't Have to Cry
  • Gordon Lightfoot, Poor Little Allison
  • James Taylor, Copperline
Verdict: All in all, The Bridge reminded me of the music that my parents listened to when I was growing up in Philadelphia in the late '70s and very early '80s...all we were missing was some Jim Croce and Anne Murray. Thanks, Mom and Dad, for those wonderful musical memories...ugh...

Discussion Time: Describe the music your parents exposed you to while you were growing up, and the formative impact on you...either because you embraced it or ran like hell...

just a stream of consciousness today...to pass over the bridge...shouldn't you have one of those false teeth with a cyanide pill in it for this station? sorry i'm so morbid here. i should be serious. i could have said 'jane's getting serious' by jon astley or 'cars that go boom' by le tigre. at least that would have been on topic with the one hit wonder topic. is this post-purchase consumer dissonance? somehow i need to find a way to procreate...want to binge drink this weekend? my cats breath smells like cat food.

My mom loved Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond, and I carry on that tradition today. She also liked Julio Iglesias, but I'm not big into him. My dad favored Gloria Estefan and Taylor Dayne, and I never got into either of them.
We also had the vinyl albums of Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys and the soundtrack to The Flamingo Kid, but I don't remember us ever actually playing them, because the needle on the record player was always busted. How's that for a blast from the past???

Brian: I remember learning from Mr. Wizard how to make your own record player. It involve rolling up a sheet of newspaper into a cone, then taping a needle to the pointy end. You then inserted a pencil in the hole of a record to spin it, and used the needle as a stylus, while the cone amplified the sound. RIP, Mr. Wizard. :(

Ryan: Will call you tomorrow about thhe binge drinking. :)
